Dr Christine Quinan (Ph.D., University of California, Berkeley) is Assistant Professor of Gender Studies in the Department of Media and Culture Studies at Utrecht University (the Netherlands). Christine works at the intersection of queer/trans studies, postcolonial studies, and critical security studies. With dr. Marjolein van den Brink (Law, Utrecht University), Christine collaborates on a project entitled Gender Identity Registration and Human Rights Effects (GIRARE), which examines relationships between changes in sex registration practices and human well-being. Tensions between new legislation and long-standing social attitudes are an important focus of the project, as is the interaction between invocations of human rights discourses and changes to the institutionalization of binary conceptions of sex and gender.
