Jo Miles and Jens Scherpe began their visit to New Zealand on 6 December with a half-day meeting in Wellington with the NZ Law Commission team which is taking forward the Commission's new project reviewing NZ's relationship property laws.

New Zealand is a distinctive jurisdiction, having in 2002 extended to cohabitants ('de factos') the same legal remedies that apply to spouses on relationship breakdown. The project encompasses all aspects of the scheme, which applies on death as well as on separation, including marital property agreements and questions of private international law. Following the morning meeting, Jo and Jens gave a lunchtime seminar to the Commission staff, discussing their experience of working on law reform projects, and in particular the value to those projects of empirical research and comparative law approaches.
