On 29 and 30 May 2017 a seminar for university professors and law lecturers took place at the Academy of European Law in Trier/Germany. The general topic of the seminar was ‘Current Reflections on EU Anti-Discrimination Law’, and Scherpe delivered a lecture on ‘The Legal Status of Transsexual and Transgender Persons’, based on his book with the same title. He also extended his lecture to cover ‘The Legal Status of Intersex Persons’ (book forthcoming in Autumn 2017), highlighting in particular the Malta Declaration of the Third International Intersex Forum and related statements by Organisation Intersex International. Scherpe concluded that the current discrimination, stigmatisation and pathologisation of transsexual and transgender persons as well as intersex persons is unacceptable and that the existing European and international human rights frameworks require immediate action.
