Born in 1964 in Moscow, Russia. Graduated in law in Moscow (1986) and in Amsterdam (2000). Awarded a PhD at Moscow Law Institute (1988). Form 1989 till 1998 taught civil and family law at Moscow State Law Academy. In 1993-1995 member of the drafting team of the New Russian Family Code (in force since in 1996). In 1995 moved to the Netherlands. From 1998 until 2005: senior research fellow at the Molengraaff Institute of Private Law, University of Utrecht, The Netherlands. At present full professor of family law at the VU University Amsterdam. Head of the Amsterdam Centre of Family Law (ACFL). Member of the Commission on European Family Law (CEFL) and of the Executive Council of the International Society of Family Law. Main field of interest: comparative family law, European family law, empirical family law studies and history of family law.
