Margareta Brattström is Professor of Private Law at the University of Uppsala and has published extensively in marital, inheritance and real estate law. Her main interest is in various issues connected to property relations between spouses and cohabitants, especially on how the law should deal with questions that arise in society of today with e.g. new family forms, increased divorce rate and changing gender roles. In this area she has, the last years, been involved in several projects, both on a Nordic and European level. She is member of several national and international scientific advisory boards and editorial boards.

She currently is Head of the Department of Law of the University of Uppsala. From 2011-2013 she was Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Law, and between 2009 and 2013 Chair of the Education Committee of the Faculty. She has been a member of the Faculty Board since 2009. In addition she has also served as the Managing Director of The Real Property Institute (IFF), Uppsala University, between 2005 and 2011.
