Professor Wai Kum LEONG is a senior member of the Faculty of Law at the National University of Singapore.
She is a graduate of the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur and the Harvard Law School. She began her academic career in 1976 at the Faculty of Law of the University of Singapore, the predecessor institution of NUS, by helping to teach Family Law which was then a compulsory course. Today she happily continues to offer Family Law as an elective course to senior students. She dedicates herself to researching and improving the Family Law in Singapore. She submitted private representations to the Select Committees of the Parliament of Singapore, in 1979 and 1995, on each of the two major reviews of the Women’s Charter which is the major marriage and family law statute in Singapore. She has published widely including her text, Elements of Family Law in Singapore 2d (Singapore: LexisNexis, 2013), and these writings are often cited by the Court of Appeal of Singapore. Professor Leong is currently working on a new edition of her textbook to incorporate the changes in family litigation introduced by the newly-created Family Justice Courts in Singapore.
