Walter Pintens is Emeritus Professor of the University of Leuven (Belgium) where during thirty years he taught family and succession law and comparative law and Honorary Professor at Saarland University (Germany) where he teaches European private law. He is doctor honoris causa of the University of Regensburg.

Professor Pintens has written several books and more than three hundred articles in the fields of family law, succession law, comparative law and private international law. He is the editor of the volume Family and Succession Law in the International Encyclopaedia of Laws and is involved in several law reviews as the Dutch Tijdschrift voor Familie- en Jeugdrecht, the Zeitschrift für Europäisches Privatrecht and the Zeitschrift für das gesamte Familienrecht where he is serving as co-editor and chairman of the International Advisory Board.

Professor Pintens is founding member of the Commission on European Family Law, vice-president of the German Scientific Association for Family Law, titular member of the International Academy of Comparative Law (Paris) and member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Max-Planck-Institute for comparative and international private law in Hamburg.
